The 60s started an era of "all hits", as numerous artists released recordings, beginning in the 50s, as 45-rpm "singles" (with another on the flip side), and radio stations tended to play only the most popular of the wide variety of records being made in the 50s and 60s. Also, artists tended to record only the best of their songs as a chance to become a hit record. The development of the Motown Sound in the 60s (Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Marvelettes and so on), folk rock music in the 60s (The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Sonny & Cher and so on) and the 60s British Invasion of bands from the U.K. (The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and so on), are major examples of American music listeners expanding from the folksinger, doo-wop and saxophone sounds of the 50s and evolving to include psychedelic music in the 60s.

The rise of the sixties counterculture movement, particularly among the youth, created a huge market for rock, soul, r&b, pop, reggae and blues music produced by drug-culture, influenced rock bands such as the The Beatles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Small Faces, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Marley, Deep Purple, The Who, Sly & the Family Stone, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Animals. Also, sixties radical music in the folk tradition was pioneered by Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, Odetta, Pete Seeger, and Joan Baez in the United States; and in England, Donovan was helping to create folk rock music.

The Los Angeles and San Francisco Sound began during the 60s with many popular rock music bands coming out of LA and the Haight-Ashbury district, well-known for its hippie culture. Such bands included Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Mamas & the Papas, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Neil Young / CSNY.

From August 15 to August 18, 1969, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair (informally, Woodstock or The Woodstock Music Festival) was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm near the hamlet of White Lake in the town of Bethel, New York. During the sometimes rainy weekend, thirty-two music acts performed outdoors in front of 500,000 concert-goers. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most pivotal moments in popular music history (not just the 60s or rock music) and was listed among Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of music. The event was captured in the successful 1970 music documentary movie Woodstock, an accompanying soundtrack album, and Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock" which commemorated the event and became a major hit for Neil Young / CSNY.
